Shocking? Not really.

At Nichols' news conference on Thursday evening, one columnist for the Sun abandoned journalistic detachment entirely as the questioning wound up, thanking Nichols profusely for his efforts over the years and breaking into a hearty round of sycophantic applause.

I have NO idea, but interestingly enough, Terry Jones--who works for the Edmonton Sun--went after Daryl Katz again yesterday.

He needs to come across as somebody you trust, to take his $100 million and add government money - your money - to the pot to build a $450 million arena which, in effect, he'd own.

Already, because of what we've gone through here, people are wondering if he's a spoiled kid who just has to have something he wants no matter what.

He needs to appear in public and answer the question "Why? Why do you want to own the hockey team this bad?"

Now, we all know the EIG doesn't need our trust to build an arena they would in fact own. No. But that's because they are a "group of the all-time greatest guys in Edmonton history." Who wouldn't want to fork over tax dollars to them?

And I know I've spent HOURS thinking about whether or not Katz is a spoiled kid. But who hasn't? I mean, why would a guy who has the money to buy the sports team of his dreams want to buy the sports team of his dreams? I would never do that if I had two billion dollars in the bank. What a brat, right?

I'm just really glad that Terry Jones--who works for the Edmonton Sun--pointed this stuff all out.

Sycophants; you can't stop 'em, you can only hope to control 'em and limit their chances.

For the life of me I cannot understand why some of the media types in town seem to hate Katz so freaking much. If any of you guys have any ideas, I'd love to hear your take.

Only thing I can think of is that he doesn't return any of their calls for interviews.

Andy- while you were swilling at Brewsters, Fernando popped in late at Hudson's again with his Italian crew. You could have offered up prayers of gratitude in person!

I know! Prez was there, and told us. I couldn't venture down there, though. Bad form.

We had some gag going last night about starting a gang called the 34 Gang. The night's hazy, though. I'll have to ask Prez and Loxy.

Funny, but if Mackinnon's Beefy Mystery Columnist is worth shaming, surely he's worth naming? Is there any reason he should be protected at the expense of other Sun guys who aren't embarrassing themselves?

I suspect the reason (besides wanting to be the bigger man, figuratively of course) is that it's so patently obvious who it is that to name him is almost an insult to the reader's intelligence.

Colby does make a good point. What if it wasn't the guy we all think it was? Would you be shocked if it was one of a couple other people at that paper? I wouldn't. So why not name who it was?

I thought these guys were de facto embarrassing themselves by working at The Sun in the first place.
