God hates what now?

**Maybe I should just stop trying to blow sunshine and admit that we've had a lot of underperforming disappointments, and that Canada has a choking problem. A partial catalogue:
Rau'Shee Warren and Gary Russell Jr. in boxing; Kristin Armstrong in the road race; the women's saber team; Alicia Sacramone; women's pair (rowing); shooter Bret Erickson; swimmer Katie Hoff and the women's 4x200m relay team; the Williams sisters. Plus still plenty of heartbreak to come in track & field, and let's not even think about what a disaster it would be to lose on the basketball court or the ball diamond.

Ahhh... you see what I did there? That's the American failures! Ha-ha! All athletes/teams who either were favoured to win gold and didn't, favoured to win a medal and didn't, or in the case of Alicia "No Relation to the Sopranos Guy" Sacramone, just blew chunks period. And that doesn't even include those who were (over)hyped by the national media as medal hopefuls, without actually being favoured, a scenario that Canadians are all-too-familiar with at the moment.

**Speaking of "no relation", I was taken aback somewhat to learn that Michael Phelps' middle name is Fred. I assume he's no relation to this guy, but if he's on the podium for medal #8 and unfurls a banner that says, "Thank God for 9/11", well... fair warning!

**And speaking of taken aback, here's the jarring headline of the Olympics so far:

Oh, so that's what, uh, he, has been up to.

**Pardon me for being part of the Maple Leaf Hype Machine, but here's what's coming up tonight/tomorrow (Day 7):
Goooooo, Canada.

Comments:

That poor Sacramone girl - its one thing to bite it in an individual event but to kill your team's hopes repeatedly ... tough to watch.

I was looking at the results - AnnaMay is right in the mix unless she swam her best in the semi, as Brown did.

And yes I do believe in miracles.

Go Canada.

I'd like to see NBC's interview with this woman. Apparently they really beat the crap out of here.

Here's a link to the interview:

The difference between the US choking and Canada is that for the States, someone like Katie Hoff is labeled a disappointment despite the fact that she won three medals. Even if none of them were gold, she'd be a hero in Canada.

There are some good prelim events tonight, too. Two Canadians are in the throwing qualifying and the men's 100-metre heats start at 9:45 EST with Bolt in the first heat and Powell in the second.

Two Canadians in the 100-metre dash, btw, although (a) no one knows who they are and (b) they are very unlikely to make the final.

Still, two of the top 80 sprinters in the world.

Two Canadians are in the throwing qualifying

...one of which is Lethbridge's own Jim Steacy, hammer thrower. Giv'er shit, buddy.

I just thought that Canada was purposely not medaling so that Montrealers wouldn't set police cars on fire.

Nah, they'll do it anyway.

...one of which is Lethbridge's own Jim Steacy, hammer thrower. Giv'er shit, buddy.

The other fellow's from Kamloops.

Only out West do they throw metal objects for sport.

That poor Sacramone girl

Forget her. What about that poor Sacamano girl?

Nothing on the Swedish wrestler going nuts and tossing his medal, Matt? I was eager to hear your thoughts.

Keep it up, btw. Fantastic stuff so far. You continue to be my favorite sportswriter not named Simmons.

Wait for it...

Only out West do they throw metal objects for sport.

Heck, we throw bones out West for sport. If Bunnock was an Olympic sport, we'd have swept the medals already.

If there's two excuses for Montrealers to burn police cars they are:
a) winning shit
b) not winning shit

and does anyone else feel uncomfortable that that Jay dude's specialty happens to be with a weapon?

I was taken aback somewhat to learn that Michael Phelps' middle name is Fred. I assume he's no relation to this guy,

Well if God hates sodomites, he should really detest a fucking asshole like Fred Phelps.

Canada's Jessica Zelinka finished 4th at Gotzis last year, which is an excellent sign...

U of C represent!

Yeah, that's all I got.

Saw that Jamaican Bolt in the 100m sprints. He ran 10.22 and looked like he was jogging.
Most Canadians break more of a sweat running to the bathroom between periods on Hockey Night in Canada.

If there are no volunteers I'm prepared to personally console Sacramone.

You know Canada, it could be a little worse....

Taiwan just lost to China at baseball after blowing a 7-3 lead in the 12th inning.

To put it in a hockey perspective, that's like Canada blowing a 3-0 lead with five minutes left in the third to Denmark, and imagine Denmark was also actively trying to erase the world's perception of Canada as an independent nation.

Now that I think about it, Denmark IS trying to erase Canada's sovereignty, what with that claim to Hans Island and all...

Denmark delenda est

Canada and Denmark are peacable nations, let's resolve this peacefully. Let's temporarily declare Hans Island a neutral site to host a showdown in the appropriate sport of Ice hockey. Winner takes "home ice advantage", once and for all.

Hell, make it a best-of-seven, which would be four times as sweet.

Bet it wouldn't be entirely peaceful, though. :)

C'mon, Denmark, bring it on.

It should be a best of seven, but it shouldn't be ice hockey; each round should be a different game: ice hockey, curling, biathlon, bobsledding, nordic combined, long-track speed skating, and, if necessary, the polar plunge.

Genius.

Thank you Carol Huynh, for winning your semifinal Greco-Roman wrestling match and guaranteeing Canada a medal at last until your steroid test comes back positive.

Wow, you're all over that, LB. Took me a minute to bring my arms down.

A week later, we're on the board. Although I guess we have to wait for the final before it's official.

Now it's on to Tonya Verbeek. Is she any relation to the Little Ball of Hate?

Well, we're in the books. Oh, and Usain Bolt is kinda fast. Some day he may actually try to run right through the finish. Yikes.

Add another to the lexicon of great sports names. A sprinter named Bolt. Usain "Greased Lightning" Bolt.

As margins of victory go, 2/10 of a second in the 100m is like 2/10 of a light year. And that was with fifth gear never even engaged. An awesome performance.

What's Tunisian for "who the hell is this asshole?"

Wow, nice to see Tyler Christopher finish fifth in the opening heats in the 400m and probably not make the semis (according to the CBC guys) forget Hayden, Shewfelt and anyone else: this guy is the most disappointing Canadian. At least he could have pulled a Felicien and run into something.

Apparently he had the flu, but still.
